낸시 도 할머니는 지난 3월 코로나 사태로 인해 아시안을 겨냥한 증오범죄가 급증한 지난 3월 화잇플레인스 몰에서 40대 괴한으로부터 폭행을 당했다. 이 괴한은 아무 이유없이 도 할머니의 목을 젖히고 눈과 코 부위를 주먹으로 가격했고, 도 할머니는 바닥에 넘어지면서 머리를 부딪혀 의식을 잃은 후 병원에 실려갔었다. 이 폭행사건은 당시 미국언론과 한인언론에 크게 보도된 바 있다.
